To complement and support the development of Transport for the North’s Strategic Transport Plan for the North of England, Rail North renewed and refreshed its Long Term Rail Strategy.
The Long Term Rail Strategy sets the framework for Rail North/Transport for the North’s approach to shorter-term rail enhancements and for the design and specification of future franchises in the North.
Working with Rail North, Transport for the North and stakeholders from across the North of England, our role was to produce an updated Long Term Rail Strategy that could be subject public consultation alongside Transport for the North’s wider Strategic Transport Plan.
Supported by data analysis and extensive stakeholder engagement, we identified a set of rail “gaps” that would have to be closed for Rail North/Transport for the North to meet their wider objectives. We went on to establish a set of conditional outputs (a statement of what the North’s future railway should look like) that, if met, would help meet Transport for the North’s strategic goals.
The consultation draft, Long Term Rail Strategy, was published by Transport for the North in January 2018.
