Ealing Broadway station is a complex, multi-modal interchange in West London with high numbers of passengers transferring between modes. To improve the interchange experience, the local council commissioned us to design and implement transport information column to communicate real-time departures and service quality for rail and tube services.
Our design team worked closely with the client to determine the function requirements and translate these into the design of an attractive yet robust transport information product able to withstand the rigours of a busy urban environment. Product fabrication was undertaken by Trueform Group, our manufacturing partners.
The column has two integrated high-definition screens that display easy to understand bus and tube digital information programmed by our team and derived from Transport for London’s open data feeds and National Rail Enquiries live information service. The column also includes static maps to provide local area bus stop locations and a network map that highlights key rail lines running through Ealing Broadway. The maps are illuminated and printed on vinyl for ease of updating.
Ealing Broadway’s Smart Column sets a new benchmark in real time transport information and one that other London boroughs and city centres will seek to replicate.
