Colombia offers valuable growth opportunities for international companies that have an interest in transport infrastructures. The country has a yearly GDP growth rate above 4%, a stable social and political environment and an ambitious national programme that has put the transport sector at the core of the strategic investments needed to support further national economic growth.
Italian firms ready to go
At present, Italy pays great attention to partnership and investment opportunities in Colombia. Recently, a delegation led by the Colombian vice-president, Germán Vargas Lleras, visited the Expo 2015 in Milan and this week the Italian prime minister, Matteo Renzi, stopped in Bogota as part of the institutional visit he is undertaking in Latin America.
Key Italian companies such as ANAS, Ansaldo, Salini-Impregilo, Technip, Gruppo Trevi, ENI and Assicurazioni Generali – to name a few – are already working on important transport and energy projects in Colombia; And prospects seem to indicate further investment and partnership opportunities.
A land of opportunities
The programme “Cuarta Generación (4G) de Concesiones Viales de Colombia” (4th generation of motorways concessions ) launched at the end of 2012 and still in progress, encompasses the signature of more than 30 new concessions for the construction and/or regeneration and management of over 8000 km of road infrastructure across the country.
In addition to these projects, the majority of which are already under financial close or at the initial construction phase, other private initiatives for the construction of new infrastructure with project financing agreements are drawing the attention of both regional and national public entities in Colombia.
The role of Steer Davies Gleave
Steer Davies Gleave has operated in Colombia since 1999. The company has worked closely with some of the key players (concessionaires, financial institutions and many more) in the motorways concessions market ruled by the 4G programme. Steer Davies Gleave is also providing support to the national government on the development of the National Multi-Modal Transport Plan, which will serve as a basis for all new transport infrastructure investment to be undertaken in the next 15 year period.
The local team in Bogotá works in an integrated manner with the rest of the company. At present, SDG’s local team in Bogota is working very closely with our Italian team on major road infrastructure projects.
